Piracy and Plagiarism: It's all about Protection.
Internet Plagiarism is the copying of information- videos, images, text, tweets, postings, etc- without giving credit to where the information came from. It can be done on purpose-
when writing something for school, and you don’t know what to say, copying and
pasting someone else’s wording can seem convenient at the time- or it can be
done without deliberate intention. Regardless of how or when it was done,
forgetting to cite where the information came from constitutes plagiarism.
Internet piracy then is when you share your plagiarized information with others, again,
regardless of whether you meant to illegally share your information or not. You
must have permission to share information, and you must properly cite the author
too.

TIPS FOR STUDENTS AND PARENTS
Students, to make sure you do not plagiarize or pirate information, here are a few tips:
1. Make sure you get your information from credible sites.
2. Make sure you have permission to use information. If you aren’t sure, don’t use
it, or ask before you use it.
3. Use a citation machine site to properly cite what you find.
Parents, you can help your child too! Here’s how:
1. Make sure you know where your child is getting their music from; make sure their
music, pictures, etc. come from legal sites and means.
2. Be involved with your child’s education, and know when assignments are due. The
more you know about assignments and due dates, the less likely your child is to
procrastinate and feel the need to plagiarize information.
3. Model proper internet usage. Always give credit to sites and sources yourself
when sharing with your kids.
